Runze Fluid Plastic Euqal & Reducing Hose Barbed Connector and Tube Fittings

Runze Fluid, a professional China manufacturer and supplier of a variety of accessories for various analysis systems, not only focuses on the research and development of different precise syringe drives, peristaltic pumps, and multiport selection valves but also the R&D of multifunctional plastic fittings and connectors. This time, let’s see RUNZE plastic barbed fittings and connectors.

What are barbed fittings?

Barbed fittings got their name from their barbed-shaped joints, different barbed fittings may be different in the number or the shape of the barb serration, but they are all great for connecting all kinds of flexible tubing, namely, they are also called hose barb connectors. Suitable for all sorts of applications, it can be chosen from nylon, polypropylene, PVC, PVDF, PTFE, stainless steel, and more material. Barbed fittings support different shapes according to the different flow paths, such as 2 ways: Straight "I" shaped barbed fitting and "L" shaped Elbow barbed fittings; 3 ways: Tee "T" shaped barbed connector, and Wye "Y" shaped barbed joint; 4 ways: Cross "X" and Double Branch Tee "TT" shaped barb fitting; 5 ways: "LLLL" barbed fittings; 6 ways: 6 ways Cross"十十" barbed connectors, etc. The biggest property of the barbed fittings is the plug-in structure, which makes it easy to assemble.

The application of the barbed fittings

Barb fittings are widely used in low-pressure (about 200psi or lower) fluid, gas, and airflow control applications. The barb serration or ridge grips the interior wall of the tubing and provides a sealing surface without damaging the tubing wall. Barbed connectors can be applied in various areas, such as analysis, medical, pharmaceutical sciences, cosmetics, biochemical, industrial, lab, food & beverage processing, etc.

How to Insert Barbed Fittings?

Step 1: Choose Tubing and Fittings

Ensure that your tubing is made of a flexible rubber or plastic material.

Don’t attempt to use them with any hard, rigid tubing. Barbed fittings are only meant to work with soft, flexible tubing.

  • Examples of compatible flexible materials are polyurethane, Pharmed bpt rubber, silicone, nylon, fluorous rubber, and PVC.

  • Flexible tubing that carries liquids, such as in beverage dispensers or irrigation systems, is typically connected using barbed fittings.

Choose a barbed fitting that matches the inside diameter of your tubing.

Use a barbed fitting with a diameter that matches the ID of your tubing exactly, or it won’t fit properly. For the detailed methods, you can refer to the below paragraph: How to choose the right size of the barbed tube fittings?

Step 2: Warm up your tubing if necessary

If your tubing is a little bit rigid, or the ID of your tubing is very close to the OD of the barbed end, it would be better to warm up your hose before plugging. You can stick the end of the tubing into the hot water for 10-20 seconds. Stick the end of the tubing into the hot water for 10-20 seconds. You might have to experiment with the exact amount of time you leave the end of the tubing in the hot water. Depending on the temperature of the water and the thickness and composition of your tubing it may take longer than 10-20 seconds.

Step 3: Push the fitting into the tubing by wiggling it into place

Stick the tip of the barbed fitting into the open end of the tubing that you just heated up. Wiggle the fitting using back and forth and up and down motions, while simultaneously pushing hard until it’s all the way inside the tubing. Check to make sure that the edge of the tubing is right up against the stop point on the barbed fitting. That means your tubing end must cover the widest part of the barbed serration If you see a gap, keep wiggling and pushing the fitting in further.

How to choose the right size of barbed tube fittings?

Before choosing the barbed tube fittings, you should find the inside diameter, or “ID” of your tubing printed on the sides or use a professional measuring tool to measure across the mouth of the tubing from one inside wall to the other. Use a barbed fitting with a diameter that matches the ID of your tubing exactly, or it won’t fit properly. For example, if the internal diameter of your tubing is 1/16"(1.6mm), use a barbed fitting with a diameter of 1/16"(1.6mm), at least no more than that.

In order to help you choose Runze barbed fittings and connectors in a better way, below are the table details for your reference.
